Raised vs. Ground-Level Deck: Which Is Better for You?

Ground-Level Decks

A ground-level deck, also called a floating deck or a platform deck, is a deck that is built close to the ground. It is the most common type of outdoor deck that can be seen in residential properties as it can be easily constructed on any level surface in the yard.

A ground-level deck is usually less than 18 inches and consists of a box frame covered with floorboards and supported by joists. Since the deck is close to the ground, it does not require a railing or a permit to build. However, it’s still best to consult your local building department if this is the case for your neighborhood. In the event that your deck must have a railing, it likely needs to be at least 36 inches high.

Raised Decks

A raised or an elevated deck is a deck that is placed higher above the ground. It does not necessarily have to be attached to the house, and it can work well as a feature around a burly tree or in a suntrap. This type of deck can also be used to elevate a hot tub at the bottom of the garden.

Unlike a ground-level deck, an elevated deck with a stair tread requires a railing around the perimeter and a building permit to construct. This type of decking offers an attractive outdoor space and adds value to your home.
